The Italian parks consist of land, sea, river or lake containing one or more ecosystems intact or even partially altered by man-made interventions. One or more natural formations, geological, geomorphological, biological, national interest or international naturalistic , Scientific, cultural, aesthetic, educational values to justify the intervention of the State for their conservation.

The National Parks currently enrolled are 22.

The 22 national parks covering a total area of approximately 1 million and four hundred thousand hectares (14,000 square kilometre), corresponding to about 5% of the national territory.
